A friend sent me a YouTube video this morning…
I travel to so many different districts and schools in our region and this video started me thinking about the kind of world we create for our children in these spaces.
I have endless conversations about academics and discipline and how to improve learning and behavior. Maybe we are asking the wrong questions because we are asking them in a room full of adults. Maybe we are missing the most important part of the equation: The voice of those who we spend so much time and energy trying to “improve”.
Instead, what if we had real conversations with children; real conversations about who they are, where they come from, what they love, what they don’t, what makes then happy in that space, and what makes them sad and scared and frustrated.
Maybe, if we took as much time including them in the conversation about what is working and not working as we do trying to answer FOR them it would make a difference.
Maybe if we took as much time working through what serves the CHILDREN instead of what serves the adults in a system that was built for children, we could make a bigger difference.
Maybe if we spent time finding out about THEIR gifts and growing those, and finding OUR gifts so we could better serve it would make a difference.
