Adolescent Literacy Series: Leading Literacy

February 11, 2020

Information: The Office of Approaches to Teaching and Professional Learning will host a two-part Adolescent Literacy Series in 2020. The series consists of one day of learning on disciplinary literacy with an instructional focus, with day two on literacy leadership with a systems focus. Attendees are encouraged to attend one or both days depending on each session’s relevance to their work.

Session Descriptions:

• Day 1: Disciplinary Literacy for Adolescent Learners: What is disciplinary literacy and how can it impact learning in the classroom? Knowledge is constructed within the disciplines in particular and unique ways. This interactive workshop will explore how content specializations can be used to do the authentic work found within each discipline. From insightful research to literacy practices, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of disciplinary literacy and the role it plays in building content knowledge. Participants are asked to bring a current lesson or unit plan, as part of the afternoon's work will include analysis and revision of the plan to reflect the day's learning.

• Day 2: Leading Adolescent Literacy at the School Level is designed for secondary principals and members of building leadership teams. Participants will gain an understanding of adolescent literacy and learn why adolescent literacy is an essential element for college and career readiness in the 21st century. Participants also will receive resources designed to assess and enhance evidence-based literacy practices in their schools. Proven literacy leadership approaches used to dramatically transform low-performing schools into nationally recognized schools also will be reviewed.

Target Audience: Educators across the cascade.

• Day 1: Teachers, building coaches, teacher leaders, building and district administration, educational service center/state support team consultants. (Be sure to bring a current unit or lesson plan.)
• Day 2: Building administrators, teacher leaders, district administrators, and educational service center/state support team consultants.
