POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTION & SUPPORTS (PBIS)

Positive Behavioral Intervention & Supports

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive framework of evidence-based strategies and systems that assist schools in creating environments that are positive, predictable, consistent, and safe. The benefits of implementing PBIS include establishing a positive and safe school culture for all students and staff, decreasing challenging behaviors, and improving academic and behavioral outcomes for all students. To maximize outcomes for ALL students, it is essential that leadership teams incorporate Culturally Responsive Practices within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports.

For more information, see the Resources pages: Culturally Responsive Practices and Multi-Tiered System of Supports.

Characteristics of PBIS schools include:

  • Common purpose and proactive approach to discipline
  • Clear set of 3-5 school-wide behavioral expectations
  • Procedures for comprehensive instruction of school-wide expectations
  • Continuum of procedures for acknowledging expected behaviors and correcting problem behaviors
  • Ongoing data-based decision making
